African Safari FAQ

Clothing

So your Zanzibar hotel accommodation is booked, or you are getting ready for the Mauritius travel experience of a lifetime. All you need to do is pack your clothes, which is a little easier said than done. We have compiled a handy list of packing advice that should make things a bit less complicated.

What not to bring:

Professional camouflage combat gear. This is simply not necessary and will make you look like an over-excited tourist, which could make you a target for potential mugging. In certain African countries this garb may also make you look like you are part of the military.

A gun. Reports of crime in Africa are often exaggerated and the areas included in our safaris are quite safe. Therefore, unless you are going on a hunting safari, there is no need to bring a weapon. Preconceived ideas about the continent and its inhabitants. Try to approach your African safari with an open mind. Instead of judging a more rural way of life and assuming that these people are less educated than you are, rather soak up the culture and learn from their alternative approach.

What to bring:

Light-weight, long- and short sleeved shirts. Approximately three of each should be sufficient. Avoid bright colours and white for improved game viewing.

Light-weight shorts and long trousers. Approximately three of each should be sufficient.

Rugged, waterproof shoes. Take a pair that you don't mind getting dirty, as well as sandals or flip-flops you can change into back at camp.

Shades and a hat with a big brim. The sun is much harsher in Africa than it is in the Northern Hemisphere. On safari you will be in the sun a lot and it is imperative that you protect yourself using protective clothing and sunblock. The perfect hat provides complete coverage from the sun, allows your head to breathe and is absorbent on the inside (to absorb sweat), while being waterproof on the outside (to stay dry in case of afternoon showers).

A versatile safari jacket. Choose a jacket that is khaki/olive/brown and is made from a non-synthetic washable material. Zip-off sleeves are a plus, as this allows you to turn your jacket into a vest during the day, which can then be converted back to a jacket when it cools down in the evening.

Five sets of lightweight, non-synthetic underwear.

Pyjamas

Swimwear

Five pairs of socks

Depending on where your safari takes place, you may also wish to take along some leisure wear and formal clothing. If you are staying in a South Africa hotel, for instance, you will be within range of various restaurants and cultural venues that you may wish to visit. Tailor your packing list to suit your particular destination; if you travel to Mauritius for instance, you are going to need more than one bathing suit.
