African Safari FAQ

Which country would you like to visit

When you plan your African safari, one of the first questions you should consider is which country you would prefer to visit. There are a lot of factors that will influence this decision such as climate, political stability, currency strength, medical requirements, infrastructure and scenery, to name but a few. Here follows a short breakdown of what the Southern and East African countries are famous for and what they offer the visitor.

SOUTH AFRICA

South African travel is a great idea for family holidays, self drive safaris and activities-based excursions such as golfing holidays. The country boasts a good infrastructure and safe drinking water, and is well-supplied of all tourist amenities. South Africa and the independent kingdoms of Swaziland and Lesotho have the largest number of conservation areas in all of Africa. An amazing 30 million acres of South Africa is designated to conservation. South Africa is well developed with all the communication- and health services one might require, and the only country that offers malaria-free Big Five game viewing (in the central and Southern areas). The Kruger National Park is the most well-known South African game reserve and should be the very first thing to be included in your South African travel plans.

NAMIBIA

Namibia travel is mostly a desert experience with wide open spaces and great scenery, excellent for self drive holidays. Fifteen percent of Namibia's area has been set aside for conservation and as a developing country it has most of the communication- and health services one might require. Etosha National Park is the country's most prominent reserve with the Etosha Pan (5000sq/km salt pan) providing a vital source of nourishment for the game that has proven to be a great Namibia travel attraction.

BOTSWANA

Botswana travel authorities have a policy that is based on low volumes of visitors and high quality experiences, and this has been the driving force behind the conservation of this country since it gained its independence. The country currently has Africa's strongest currency and you can expect to pay considerably more for Botswana travel experiences. However, you get what you pay for: some reserves are so large and have so few inhabitants that one might come across animals that have never seen humans before! The Okavango River Delta is world famous for its pristine beauty and abundance of bird- and animal live. Infrastructure is poor off the major routes, but this adds to the "real Africa" experience. Botswana is a landlocked country. The Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta and the Chobe National Park represent Botswana's most commonly visited reserves; these areas include flood plains and lagoons, dry bushveld and mopane woodland.

ZIMBABWE

We are currently not selling safaris to Zimbabwe unless specifically requested.

ZAMBIA

This is a developing destination with very friendly people that gladly welcome you to their country. Game viewing is excellent and varied, and the Victoria Waterfalls may be viewed from Livingston town. River-based safaris come highly recommended as this gives you the opportunity to view elephants crossing the river, hippopotami thrashing about and crocodiles waiting in hungry anticipation for their prey. Zambia is a developing country with limited communication- and health services on offer. Zambia's popular parks, including South Luangwa, have seen considerable improvement in the way of roads and infrastructure in the last few years - making them more accessible to the general public.

TANZANIA

Tanzania tours are a great option for individuals who enjoy game viewing, as the country has devoted one third of its land to conservation. Major attractions include Kilimanjaro (Africa's highest peak), as well as the Ngorogoro Crater, the Great Rift Valley and the sprawling open plains that lie in between. The infrastructure in Tanzania is not as extensive as that of most other Southern African countries so make sure you use a reputable Tanzania tour company to ensure a comfortable holiday experience. The great Serengeti Game Reserve is found in Tanzania and is famous for its wildebeest migration. Off the coast you will find the Spice Island of Zanzibar, an excellent destination for a beach and cultural holiday combination.

KENYA

If you are interested in a Kenya holiday, you can prepare yourself for one of the highest rated safari experiences in the world. The country has 60 distinct conservation areas, which are home to large herds of game that migrate over hundreds of miles - descendents of thousands that have done so over the centuries. Hot-air ballooning is popular and allows the visitor an unforgettable view over the plains and the herds of wildebeest. The Masai Mara National Reserve and surrounding areas are famous for their excellent ballooning conditions, so make sure to include it in your Kenya holiday itinerary if you are interested in enjoying this singular safari experience. Cost can be a factor though - rising prices have impacted negatively on the number of Kenyan safaris undertaken over the last few years. Mount Kenya is one of the country's top safari attractions and a popular destination for climbers who want to climb Africa's second highest peak. Kenya is a developing country with some communication- and health services on offer.
