African Safari FAQ
Animal and game reserve list
Whether you are planning to do some South Africa travel or Swaziland travel, to go on a Zimbabwe safari or to travel to Namibia, we have compiled a list of approximately 100 mammals indigenous to Southern and Eastern Africa that you are most likely to come across on African safari in these regions. Please note that this list is not 100 percent accurate, as animals are constantly being reintroduced back into areas where they were once extinct. You will deduce from the list below that the following game reserves have the biggest variety of animals:
- Kruger National Park, Pilanesberg and Hluhluwe in South Africa
- Moremi and Chobe in Botswana
- South Luangwa in Zambia
- Serengeti in Tanzania
- Masai Mara in Kenya
If it is your first African safari, keep these names in mind when planning your itinerary. Southern and Eastern African safaris also offer excellent bird watching. Please note that not all reserves and animals in the area are included in this list.
- Elephant (Loxodonta africana) - Addo, Hluhluwe, Kruger, Pilanesburg, Etosha, Moremi, Chobe, Hwange, Mana Pools, Kafue, Luangwa, Upemba, Ruaha, Tsavo, Arusha, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, Ruwenzori, Virunga, Garamba, Kidepo, Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Mt Elgon, Marsabit, Samburu, Mt Kenya, Aberdares, Masai Mara, Amboseli.
Habitat - Elephants have a wide habitat range and can be seen on most African safaris.

White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) - Hluhluwe, Mkuzi, Kruger, Pilanesberg, Chobe, Hwange, Garamba
Habitat - Typical habitat is permanent water woodlands with thickets, such as will be seen during Swaziland travel and Botswana travel.

Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) - Addo, Hluhluwe, Mkuzi, Kruger, Pilanesberg, Etosha, Hwange, Mana Pools, South Luangwa, Tsavo, Serengeti, Nairobi
Habitat - Woodlands with thickets and permanent water, but is also found in arid conditions, so will be seen on most African safaris.

Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) - St Lucia, Ndumo, Kruger, Moremi, Chobe, Mana Pools, Kafue, Luangwa, Upemba, Arusha, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Meru, Masai Mara
Habitat - Needs permanent water so is likely to be seen during your Botswana travel, Zimbabwe safari and South African travel.

Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) - Addo Elephant, Hluhluwe, Kruger, Moremi, Chobe, Hwange, Mana Pools, Kafue, Luangwa, Tsavu, Arusha, Serengeti, Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Mt Elgon, Samburu, Meru, Mt Kenya, Aberdares, Masai Mara, Nairobi, Amboseli
Habitat - Needs lots of grass and at least 250 mm rain per year, so they are likely to be seen on your South African travel and Botswana travel.

Cape Mountain Zebra (Equus zebra zebra) - Cape of Good Hope, Bontebok, Karoo, Mountain Zebra
Habitat - Mountainous areas of the Eastern & Western Cape in South Africa.

Grevy's Zebra (Equus grevyi) - East Turkana, Samburu, Meru
Habitat - Inhabits semi desert plains and dry open woodland savannah.

Plains Zebra / Burchell's Zebra (Equus burchellii) - Hluhluwe, Mkuzi, Kruger, Pilanesburg, Etosha, Chobe, Kafue, Luangwa, Ruaha, Tsavo, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Nairobi
Habitat - Open woodland scrub and grassland, so you will see them on most African safaris.

Hartmanns Mountain Zebra (Equus zebra hartmannae) - Namibia
Habitat - Occurs where mountains and lowlands meet, and can be seen when you travel to Namibia.

Okapi (Okapi johnstoni) - Salonga, Maiko, Virunga
Habitat - Dense forest.

Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) - Most African game reserves
Habitat - Areas of dry savannah woodland, so they can be seen on most African safaris.

Gemsbok (Oryx gazella) - Kgalagadi, Namib-Naukluft, Etosha, Hwange, Tsavo, Serengeti, Samburu, Meru
Habitat - Arid and semi arid open grassland, scrub, light open woodland, penetrating into savannah woodland. Truly desert adapted meaning they can be seen on almost all African safaris.

Eland (Taurotragus oryx) - Mountain Zebra, Addo, Kruger, Pilanesburg, Kgalagadi, Etosha, Chobe, kafue, Luangwa, Upemba, Ruaha, Tsavo, Arusha, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Samburu, Meru, Masai Mara, Nairobi, Amboseli
Habitat - Arid scrub and grassland, savannah woodland, Cape macchia and montane grassland. Independent of water and can be seen during South African travel and Botswana travel.

Sable Antelope (Hippotragus niger) - Kruger, Chobe, Hwange, Mana Pools, Kafue, Luangwa, Upemba, Ruaha, Selous, Shimba Hills
Habitat - Savannah woodland, avoids dense woodland and short grass.

Roan Antelope (Hippotragus equinus) - Kruger, Chobe, Hwange, Mana Pools, Luangwa, Nyika Plateau, Upemba, Ruaha, Shimba Hills, Trangire, Serengeti, Garamba, Kidepo, Masai Mara
Habitat - Lightly wooded savannah with open areas of medium to tall grass.

Common waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) - St Lucia, Hluhluwe, Mkuzi, Kruger, Moremi, Chobe, Hwange, Mana Pools, Kafue, Luangwa, Upemba, Tsavo, Garamba, Samburu, Meru, Nairobi
Habitat - Permanent water in proximity to woodland open grassland close to cover of reed beds, so it can be seen in Kenya and during South African travel.

Habitat - Permanent water in proximity to woodland open grassland close to cover of reed beds.

Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus stresiceros) - Karoo, Addo, Hluhluwe, Mkuzi, Kruger, Etosha, Moremi, Chobe, Hwange, Mana Pools, Kafue, Luangwa, Ruaha, Ngoronngoro, Kidepo, Marsabit.
Habitat - woodland and arid areas along water courses meaning that you may see them when you travel to Namibia and during your South Africa travel.

Lesser Kudu (Tragelaphus imberbis) - Ruaha, Tsavo, Tarangire, kidepo, Meru
Habitat - Acacia woodland and dense scrub.

Nyala (Tragelaphus angasii) - Hluhluwe, Mkuzi, Ndumo, Kruger
Habitat - Thickets in savannah woodland, including forest patches on old termite hills and dense riverine bush that is seen during South African travel.

Sitatunga (Tragelaphus spekei) - Moremi, Chobe, Kafue, Salonga, Ruwenzori, Queen Elizabeth.
Habitat - Restricted to dense reed beds and adjacent grassland in wetlands.

Bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus) - Addo, St Lucia, Hluhluwe, Kruger, Moremi, Chobe, Mana Pools, Kafue, Luangwa, Nyika Plateau, Upemba, Arusha, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, Ruwenzori, Virunga, Garamba, Queen Elizabeth, Mt Elgon, Marsabit, Samburu, Meru, Mt Kenya, Aberdares, Masai Mara, Nairobi.
Habitat - Dense cover in the underbrush of woodland and forest, near permanent water.

Habitat - Dense forest and bamboo thickets.

Habitat - Floodplains and rolling hills, need permanent water.

Mountain Reedbuck (Redunca fulvorufula) - Mt Zebra, Giant's Castle, Kruger, Pilanesburg, Mt Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro, Kidepo, Meru.
Habitat - Dry stony slopes with grass cover and scattered bushes.

Southern Reedbuck (Redunca arundinum) - St Lucia, Hluhluwe, Kruger, Moremi, Chobe, Hwange, Mana Pools, Kafue, Luangwa, Ruaha, Selous.
Habitat - Permanent water with tall grass and reedbeds.

Grey Rhebok (Pelea caprelus) - Bontebok, Giants castle.
Habitat - Mountainous country.

Black Wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou) - Karoo, Mt Zebra, Giants Castle
Habitat - Open Karoo and grasslands where water is available.

Blue Wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) - Hluhluwe, Mkuzi, Kruger, Kgalgadi, Etosha, Moremi, Chobe, Hwange, Kafue, Luangwa, Selous, Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Sereengeti, Masai Mara, Nairobi, Amboseli
Habitat - Open woodland, scrub and grassland, needs access to water or space to migrate, and can therefore be seen on many African safaris.

Lichtenstein's Hartebeest (Sigmoceros lichtensteinii) - Kruger, Kafue, Luangwa, Upemba, Ruaha
Habitat - Savanna woodland adjacent to floodplains.

Red Hartebeest (Karoo, Mt Zebra, Addo, Kgalagadi, Etosha, Hwange, Selous, Tsavo, Serengeti, kidepo, Masai Mara, Nairobi.
Habitat - Open grasslands and semi arid bush savannah.

Tsessebe (Damaliscus lunatus) Pilanesberg, Kruger, Etosha, Moremi, Chobe, Hwange
Habitat - Open woodland and grassland bordering woodland.

Habitat - Inhabit open savannah woodland

Habitat - Highveld grassland with permanent water.

Habitat - Mixture of grassland and low scrub in the fynbos zone.

Impala (Aepyceros melampus) - Hluhluwe, Mkuzi, Kruger, Etosha, Chobe, Hwange, Mana Pools, Kafue, Luangwa, Ruaha, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, Samburu, Meru, Nairobi.
Habitat - Open woodland and dependant on water, but can be seen on most African safaris.

Habitat - Arid country in thorn scrub.
- Springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) - Karoo, Mt Zebra, Kgalagadi, Namib-Naukluft, Etosha
Habitat - Arid and semi desert scrub and grassland, such as may be seen when you travel to Namibia and during your South African travel.

Thomson's Gazelle (Gazella thomsoni) - Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Masai Mara, Nairobi, Amboseli
Habitat - Occupies open grassland.

Grant's Gazelle (Gazelle granti) - Ngorongoro, Samburu, Masai Mara, Nairobi, Amboseli
Habitat - Semi dessert scrub to open savannah woodland.

Klipspringer (Oreotragus oreotragus) - Karoo, Mt Zebra, Kruger, Namib-Naukluft, Hwange, Upemba, Tsavo, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Mt Kilimanjaro, Samburu.
Habitat - Confined to rocky areas.

Oribi (Ourebia ourebia) - Giants Castle, Chobe, Kafue, Luangwa, Upemba, Serengeti, Akagera, Kidepo, Murchison Falls, Mt Elgon.
Habitat - Open habitat with short grass and patches of heavy cover.

Steenbok (Raphicerus campestris) - Bontebok, Karoo, Mt Zebra, Hluhluwe, Mkuzi, Kruger, Pilanesburg, Kgalagadi, Etosha, Chobe, Hwange, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Nairobi.

Habitat - Rocky hills with vegetation and adjacent areas of open grassland.

Habitat - Thick scrub and bush including fynbos.

Habitat - Forest and dense woodland

Habitat - Forest and dense bush.

Common Duiker (Sylvicapra Grimmia) - Cape of Good Hope, Bontebok, Karoo, Addo, Hluhluwe, Mkuzi, Kruger, Etosha, Chobe, Hwange, Mana Pools, Kafue, Upemba, Salonga, Virunga.
Habitat - Scrub and bush woodland with an understory of bushes, grassland with patches of bush, making it possible to see on many African safaris.

Habitat - Dense woodland and thickets with plenty of low shrubs but little grass.

Habitat - Dry woodland with thickets and underbrush.

Habitat - Open woodland, grassland, marshland and floodplains.

Habitat - Forest thickets and dense growth along rivers.

Giant Forest Hog (Hylochoerus meinertzhageni) - Ruwenzori, Virunga, Garamba, Queen Elizabeth, Mt Elgon, Mt Kenya, Aberdares.
Habitat - Dense forest and mountain areas.

Aardvark (Orycteropus afer) - Karoo, Mt Zebra, Addo, Hluhluwe, Kruger, Kgalagadi, Etosha, Chobe, Hwange, Mana Pools, Kafue, Luangwa, Upemba, Tsavo, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Virunga, Garamba, Queen Elizabeth, Nairobi.
Habitat - Main habitat required is a supply of ants and termites for food, so it can be seen on most African safaris.

Habitat - Wide habitat tolerance usually associated with broken rocky country or forest. Not dependant on water.

Habitat - A very wide habitat but does not occur in true desert

Habitat - Open dry areas with sparse plant cover.

African Wild Cat (Felis lybica) - Most of Southern and Eastern African reserves.
Habitat - Occurs in all habitats except true desert, so it can be seen on most African safaris.

Seval (felis serval) - Giants Castle, Hluhluwe, Kruger, Etosha, Chobe, Hwange, Kafue, Luangwa, Tsavo, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Queen Elizabeth, Marsabit, Samburu
Habitat - Dense well watered grassland, reed beds - always near water.

Civet (Civettictis civetta) - Kruger, Etosha, Moremi, Chobe, Hwange, Kafue, Luangwa, Tsavo, Urusha, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Virunga, Garamba, Queen Elizabeth, Masai Mara
Habitat - Woodland with permanent water.

Large-spotted Genet (Genetta tigrina) - Cape of Good Hope, Bontebok, Addo, Hluhluwe, Mkuzi, Kruger, Moremi, Chobe, Hwange, Mana Pools, Luangwe, Serengeti, Virunga, Garamba, Queen Elizabeth.
Habitat - Prefers forests and forest fringes and depends on the availability of drinking water.

Small-spotted Genet (Genetta genetta) - Cape of Good Hope, Bontebok, Karoo, Mt Zebra, Kruger, Pilanesberg, Kgalgadi, Namib Naukluft, Etosha, Moremi, Chobe, Hwange, Upemba, Tsavo, Serengeti, Samburu, Masai Mara, Nairobi.
Habitat - Woodland, scrub, fynbos. Occurs in arid areas and penetrates desert along rivers.

Spotted Hyaena (Crocta crocuta) - Umfolozi/Hluhluwe, Kruger, Kgalagadi, Namib Naukluft, Etosha, Moremi, Chobe, Hwange, Mana Pools, Kafue, South Luangwa, Nyika Plateau, Upemba, Tsavo, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Virunga, Garamba, Mt Elgon, Marsabit, Samburu.
Habitat - A wide range of habitats excluding only deserts and dense forests.

Brown Hyaena (Hyaena brunnea) - St Lucia, Kruger, Pilanesberg, Kgalagadi, Namib-Naukluft, Cape Cross, Etosha, Hwange.
Habitat - Occurs in a wide range of habitats from Savannah woodland to deserts, making it possible to see on most African safaris.

Striped Hyaena (Hyaena hyaena) - Serengeti, Marsabit, Samburu.
Habitat - It occurs in arid areas and is found mostly around rocky outcrops.

Aardwolf (Proteles cristatus) - Cape of Good Hope, Bontebok, Karoo, Mt Zebra, Willem Pretorius, Hluhluwe/Umfolozi, Kruger, Pilanesberg, Kgalagadi, Etosha, Chobe, Hwange, Tsavo, Serengeti, Nairobi.
Habitat - Occurs were harvester termites are available, except in true deserts and forests.

Wild Dog ( Lycaon pictus) - Umfolozi/Hluhluwe, Kruger, Moremi, Chobe, Hwange, Mana Pools, Kafue, South Luangwa, Arusha, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Virunga, Garamba, Samburu, Masai Mara.
Habitat - Open grassland, woodland, bushveld and broken hilly areas.

Golden Jackal (Canis aureus) - Serengeti
Habitat - Open country.

Black-backed Jackal (Canis mesomelas) - Karoo, Addo Elephant, Giants Castle, Willem Pretorius, Umfolozi/Hluhluwe, Kruger, Kgalagadi, Namib Naukluft, Etosha, Hwange, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Marsabit, Samburu, Masai Mara, Nairobi.
Habitat -Occurs in almost any habitat except thick forest, so it can be seen on most African safaris.

Side-striped Jackel (Canis adustus) - St Lucia, Kruger, Moremi, Chobe, Hwange, Mana Pools, Kafue, South Luangwa, Kundelungu, Upemba, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Virunga, Garamba, Mt Elgon, Marsabit, Samburu.
Habitat - Mostly associated with woodland but in Northern Natal occurs in grassland.

Bat-eared Fox (Otocyon megalotis) - Karoo, Mt Zebra, Kruger, Kgalagadi, Namib Naukluft, Etosha, Chobe, Hwange, Tsavo, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Samburu, Masai Mara, Nairobi, Amboseli
Habitat - Habitat must include the presence of harvester termites. Short grassland with bare ground and open woodland with sparse ground cover are ideal.

Cape Fox (Vulpes chama) - Bontebok Park, Karoo, Mt Zebra, Willem Pretorius, Kgalagadi, Namib-Naukluft, Etosha.
Habitat - Semi-arid open grassland, light woodland and Karoo scrub.

Cape Clawless Otter (Aonys capensis) - Karoo, Giants Castle, St Lucia, Mkuzi, Kruger, Chobe, Kafue, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Virunga, Garamba, Masai Mara.
Habitat - Fresh water, estuaries, lagoons and the sea (as long as fresh drinking water is available).

Spotted-necked Otter (Lutra maculicollis) - Giants Castle, Kruger, Moremi, Chobe, Kafue, Gombe Stream, Rubando Island, Salonga, Maiko, Virunga, Garamba.
Habitat -Fresh water only and dense vegetation for shelter.

Honey Badger (Mellivora capensis) - Karoo, Umfolozi/Hluhluwe, Kruger, Kgalagadi, Etosha,Chobe, Hwange, Mana Pools, Kafue, South Luangwa, Upemba, Tsavo, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Maiko, Virunga, Queen Elizabeth, Masai Mara.
Habitat - Occurs in wide range of habitats except desert.

Striped Weasel (Poecilogale albinucha) - Willem Pretorius, Hluhluwe/Umfolozi, Kgalagadi, Upemba, Virunga, Queen Elizabeth.
Habitat - Mostly grassland or open woodland.

Habitat - Occurs in almost any habitat.

Suricate (Suricata suricatta) - Karoo, Mt Zebra, Willem Pretorius, Kgalagadi, Namib Naukluft
Habitat - In scrub, open woodland and grassland extending into fynbos.

Cape Fur Seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) - Cape Gross Seal.
Habitat - Occurs in coastal waters up to 160 km from the coast.

Dugong (Dugong dugong) - None (Mozambique and west coast of Africa)
Habitat - Inhabits the shallow protected waters of bays and lagoons

Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) - Kahuzi-Biega, Maiko, Virunga
Habitats - Less than 20 000 survive in the wild, those that do are found in thick forest.

Common Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) -Gombe Stream, Kahuzi-biega, Maiko, Virunga, Garamba, Murchison Falls.
Habitat - Occurs in various forest types, mixed woodland and open grasslands.

Olive Baboon (Papio cynocephalus) - Kafue, Kundelungu, Gombe Stream, Tsavo, Arusha, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Salonga, Murchison Falls, Mt Elgon, Mt Kenya, Nairobi
Habitat - Most habitats in East Africa.

Chacma Baboon (Papio ursinus) - Cape of Good Hope, Mt Zebra, Giants Castle, Willem Pretorius, Hluhluwe/Umfolozi, Kruger, Pilanesberg, Chobe, Hwange, Mana Pools, South Luangwa.
Habitat ? Almost anywhere as long as food and water and suitable sleeping place is available.
