Benguerra Lodge

Along the historical Mozambique channel lies tropical Ilha de Benguerra. It is here that Benguerra Lodge extends to wayfarers the delights of snorkeling, diving, deep sea fishing and remote pristine beaches. Sunsets, peace and contentment are a reality at Benguerra; totally unspoilt; totally unique.

The Lodge

Accessed by air, the luxury thatched Benguerra lodge offers exclusivity in a tranquil and remote setting. Merged into a natural milkwood forest bordering Benguerra Bay and encircled by silver beaches, coral reefs and turquoise seas, the lodge is flanked by 2 Cabanas, 10 Casitas and a private Villa - catering for 28 guests. A mosaic of forest, savannah and wetland ecosystems sustains a diverse population of fauna and flora in this idyllic island getaway.

The Accommodation

All rooms have a private view of the ocean. Enjoy the magnificent sunsets and abundant bird life from your wooden deck.

The Cuisine

Freshly caught fish, calamari and crab are tantalisingly prepared together with exotic Portuguese dishes. Meals are relaxed affairs served in different settings and always with unsurpassed personal attention.

The Watersports

Benguerra is a snorkeller and divers paradise. Our fully equipped diving facility will take you to breathtakingly unspoilt reefs. In crystal-clear waters, watch the vast array of jewel-like fish and the extraordinarily shaped corals. For the more adventurous, there's still the thrill of a night or wreck dive!

The Fishing

All of the fishing takes place from the 22ft custom built walk around catamarans. Powered by twin motors and guided by experienced fishing guides, they provide the ideal platform to target the full range of species in the area. The fishing is varied and exciting from sight fishing to teased Sailfish, plugging for Giant Trevally or casting to surface feeding Bonito. The boats are also ideally suited to fly-fishing, and all of the species can be targeted on the fly-rod, the exception being Marlin.

Saltwater fly fishing - we've all the tackle you need. Our professional guide will take you out on a customised fly fishing boat. Meander around the flats, casting for rare bone fish or others.

The Activities

After snorkeling the reef, sail to the deserted Pansy Island, a unique breeding ground for the legendary pansy shell. Stay for a while, collecting colourful memories of the multitude of brightly coloured shells in this exquisite setting.

Sunbathe and picnic in seclusion - we'll set up your own private picnic and leave you to explore the birdlife along the tideline and the freshwater lakes or simply comb deserted beaches in solitude and serenity.

On foot or in open landrover, the choice of how you explore Benguerra is entirely your own. As a relaxing alternative, enjoy a sunset sail on a traditional dhow. For bird-lovers, Benguerra is home to over 115 varieties of birds, including the rare Crab Plover, Olive Bee-Eater, Green Coucal and the Narina Trogon.

A trip to the mainland can easily be arranged. Visit the local market, enjoy lunch and view the old harbour and the famous Donna Anna Hotel.

The Legend

Gold, ivory, pearls and slaves. The tales of the riches that flowed along this ancient trade route are too numerous to mention. Some say that the pearles from the bygone Sofaland charmed the Queen of Sheba.

Today the beaches are once more deserted, but the legends of yesteryear remain. The dugongs, a living legend, still follow the same routes as their ancestors. As they glide quietly through the waters in front of you, you'll perhaps understand why they are said to be the source of the mermaid fantasies.

When you dive the legendary reefs, listen carefully - you might hear the plaintive song of the whales.

The choice is yours to do as much or as little as you please ... dreams become reality at Benguerra.
