Cathbert Country Inn
Ann and Robert have a complete set of correct attitudes, as
far as we are concerned: they have purposefully kept Cathbert's small (only
eight rooms), "so we get to know our guests"; it's smart without going over the
top and yet totally relaxed; and the food is a major focus. Bedrooms have views
over a reservoir, farmland, vineyards, and the Simonsberg Mountains loom behind
the house. Guests can walk up Kanonskop from Cathbert, a hill from which they
used to signal to ships out at sea. You sleep in chalets with open-plan
bed/sitting rooms and are refreshingly simple in style (and well-equipped with
towelling bathrobes and other welcome luxuries). Each chalet has its little
front garden where you might be honoured with a haughty visit from one of the
resident peacocks, whose home this really is. Ann spends her day between
reception and the kitchen where she is maestro - (set) menus are based on what
she finds freshest around her. Her food is truly delicious, beautifully
presented (only to residents) - 'modern' without being outre - and a real pull
for Cathbert's burgeoning fan club. Robert, meanwhile, acts as (and is!) the
charming and knowledgeable sommelier and host.
