Chiefs Camp
Location
Chief's Camp is located in the exclusive Mombo concession of the Moremi Game Reserve. This concession is revered as one of the region's prime game-viewing destinations and has been called the "predator capital" of Africa. The area offers spectacular game viewing year round.
The Camp is situated on the northwestern tip of Chief's Island, in what is termed seasonal delta. The area is therefore seasonally inundated with flood waters. Generally the flood waters infiltrate the area in June/July and remain in situ for a period of 4 to 5 months.
Accommodation and Facilities
The camp was constructed on a green-field site in an untrammeled area of the concession. It has been open since September 1999.
Guest accommodation comprises 12 luxury tents (24 beds). Each unit offers en-suite facilities and a private balcony. Electricity is supplied by a combination of silent packed generator and battery system allowing 24-hour power supply. Ceiling fans, and hair dryers are located in each room in addition to emergency telephones.
The main lodge complex houses the dining area, bar, curio shop, library and reception area. This structure has been built into the existing landscape, under a heavy canopy of mature Jackalberry, Sausage and Rain trees. The main deck area is split level and offers expansive views over the floodplain to the north. The lower level of the deck houses an exquisite swimming pool.
Game Viewing & Activities
Game viewing in the Mombo area is nothing short
of spectacular at any given time. Apart from its predators, the
area is also renowned for its large concentrations of plains-game,
elephant and buffalo. Since the camp opened no less than 52 different
lion have been identified within a 9-kilometer radius of camp.
Further, game-sighting statistics over the past twelve months
reveal that leopard have been spotted every 2 to 3 game drives.
