Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse
Tucked deep into the spectacular Drakensberg Mountains,
which have recently been declared a World Heritage site, lies Cleopatra Mountain
Farmhouse.
Adjoining the Highmoor section of the Giant's Castle Nature Reserve, Cleopatra
is an exciting gourmet getaway in an idyllic setting. Cleopatra also offers the
nature lover Bushman Rock Art and stunning mountain fauna and flora.
Following a three year culinary odyssey through Europe, England and Ireland
renowned owner and chef - Richard Poynton - creates menus with flair and above
all - flavour. Home grown vegetables, freshly caught trout, homemade breads with
local cheeses and bundles of fresh herbs and salads all just picked from the
garden are served daily with passion and patience all reflecting wonderful
tastes and textures of great country food. The eclectic menu changes
daily.
Mouse's original decorating has created a tasteful, interesting and relaxed
environment ideal for that home from home feeling. Carefully selected
curiosities, assorted relics of yesteryear and handcrafted comforts produce an
ethos of farm-style leisure.
Richard and Mouse share their enthusiasm and knowledge with their guests.
Blazing log fires on chilly evenings, an underground wine cellar in which to
choose just the right bottle of South African wine or aged port from its walls
and an wonderful dining room cantilevered over the trout-stocked dam create a
rare experience. With only eleven rooms Cleopatra ensures a quiet, peaceful stay
surrounded by caring staff.
The soaring mountains which rise literally from the bottom of the garden and
gently meandering trout filled crystal clear streams make this an idyllic rural
setting for that very special break. San (bushman) rock art, fauna, flora,
hiking, swimming in the mountain pools, horse riding, birding and fishing make
Cleopatra an all round experience never to be forgotten.
Richard and Mouse Poynton's warm hospitality and legendary approach to décor and
food has warmed the hearts of all their guests.
