Cybele Forest Lodge
Deep in the heart of the forest, you'll find an old hunting
lodge called Cybele Forest Lodge: 300 acres of African paradise surrounded by
timber plantations, mountains and meadows. In the very centre is the Lodge
itself. A charming old farmhouse with a wide verandah where you can sip your
sundowners and look out over the magnificent gardens. Watch the playful monkeys
cavorting in the giant turpentine trees. Take in the cool violet blue of the
jacaranda, the shocking pink of the tibouchina and the scarlet umbrella of the
African flame tree. Wander down to the large secluded swimming pool with its
comfortable sun beds. Here you can relax and listen to the creaking of the
bluegum trees in the forest breeze. Breathe in the heady aroma of frangipani,
gardenia and buddleia.
The lodge is within easy reach of Johannesburg - just under 3½ hours drive and
you really couldn't choose a more comfortable base from which to explore the
surrounding countryside. Only a short distance away over the mountains from
Cybele are the spectacular attractions of the area such as God's Window,
Bourkes Luck Potholes and the Blyde River Canyon.
Accommodation at the lodge is limited to 28 people, and each of the various
suites, cottages and studios has been individually decorated and personalised.
Most include sitting rooms, some private walled patios and yet another has a
private sauna. All the suites have their own private swimming pools, and all
the cottages and suites have log fireplaces with a plentiful supply of wood so
that in winter you can drift off to the soothing sound of logs crackling in the
fireplace. Very romantic.
If total privacy is what you are looking for, try one of our paddock suites.
Situated with a stunning view over the mountains, forests and meadows, these
spacious thatched suites offer great comfort and the ultimate in luxury
accommodation. Comprising a main bedroom and bathroom - featuring a walled
garden shower - a large sitting room, a second bathroom, an upstairs gallery
with extra beds, and a sun terrace. Each of these suites also has its own
generously proportioned swimming pool.
To help you work up an appetite, the Lodge has its own riding stables with a
groom who will escort you on your ride at whatever pace you choose. The scenery
is breathtaking and this really is magnificent riding country.
If you prefer something a little less strenuous, there are some wonderful
walks. Stroll down to the river through the forest where the wild bushbuck
live in the thickets. Walk along the river-bank to the waterfall. This is a
birdwatcher's delight and there are many different varieties to be seen - from
colourful sunbirds and kingfishers to purplecrested louries and fish eagles. Or
borrow some of our tackle and try your hand at catching some plump rainbow
trout from the river which is stocked for the use of Cybele's
guests.
