La Plume Guest House

La Plume Guest House is a charming Victorian-style homestead dating back to 1902. Situated in the tranquil surroundings of a working ostrich, alfalfa and vine farm, amidst the scenic Elephants River Valley with spectacular views of the Swartberg Mountain Range. La Plume offers much more than mere accommodation. High quality local materials, fine antique furniture and a hint of colonial extravangance create a warm, friendly and peaceful atmosphere. Each suite bedroom has a unique sense of style and design. Comfort boosting aids in each room such as air conditioning, bar fridge, TV, hospitality tray etc are given. The honeymoon suites and self-catering family cottage add to the accommodation diversity. Dinner is available on request.

There’s bird watching and hiking among the fynbos and rare succulents. Mountain biking and cycling. There are leisurely walks in complete safety and solitude. Take a balloon flight and visit the world’s only meerkat (mongoose – cat-like predators) conservation program where you can walk with these little “earth people” and be at one with nature. The location puts guests within easy access to natural hot springs, nature and wildlife reserves, the Cango Caves, ostrich show farms and wine estates. (Ask Karin to prepare a picnic basket to take on your excursions.)

There is also a swimming pool.

Why La Plume?

Roll to a halt on the crunching pebbles and Pieter, the famous La Plume porter, will appear as if by magic. By the time Lena and Christel have greeted you like a long awaited friend come home and Linda and Corlu have signed you in, you will be enjoying your welcome drink on the wide veranda, looking across the manicured garden and over the vast Olifants River Valley.

Discuss your sight-seeing plans with us. We are genuinely interested in making your stay very, very enjoyable indeed, and we are able to make valuable suggestions on your planned activities, because we know Oudtshoorn very well.

Your luggage will have been delivered to your sumptuous room, meticulously cleaned by Bernadette, Kallas, Koekie and Lea. Laundry? Henna will take care of that little detail. (O, Karin has left some local port for you.)

The rolling lawns and the sparkling pool are ready for your enjoyment because Josop and Thys made it so; because Andries and Allan kept the grounds and the buildings in prime condition, as if they were expecting you, and no other, to arrive and enjoy it.

The kitchen is run by Katie. The kitchen is a very important place. The kitchen is a very busy place, what with Katie's beskuit (rusks) and appeltert (apple pie) and Bettie's melktert (custard pie, although South African melktert is just so much. superior, really). A gourmand's habitat, is the kitchen, considering Bartel's fillets, and Bettie's traditional meat dishes, and Katie's vegetable creations, and Klara's salads.

It is with regret that we have to say good-bye. your rooms are booked by others, we're afraid. But, please, come again. Come again, soon! We're always delighted to have you over. We've grown fond of you.

And so, as you drive down the lane and leave La Plume, someone will be on the veranda to wave you goodbye - until next time.
