Mozambique Discovery Mozambique, a country with a colourful and sometimes chequered past, offers a rich mix of experiences. Sail in a Dhow, snorkel in crystal clear waters and walk on deserted beaches, all on a startling coastline of incredible natural beauty. The appeal of this destination is that it remains relatively undiscovered by tourists. Adding the wildlife of South Africa’s Kruger National Park, and the history of Zimbabwe, makes for a great 14 day adventure. DAY 1: KRUGER NATIONAL PARK Departing Johannesburg our route winds its way through marvellous scenery as we head to Kruger National Park. With camera and binoculars at the ready, we eagerly begin our search for its abundant wildlife. For this is now Big 5 country, where chance encounters with lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and even leopard make for exciting game viewing. We overnight in one of the park’s rest camps. DAY 2: SWAZILAND Leaving Kruger we enter the soaring highlands of the Kingdom of Swaziland. This small independent country possesses a proud people, together with diverse and beautiful scenery. Mbabane Market offers a variety of traditional crafts. Mlilwane Wildlife Reserve provides the opportunity for a walk with a ranger (horse riding also available), close viewing of hippo at the camp's watering hole and a unique atmosphere for our camp. DAY 3: MAPUTO We cross into Mozambique to explore the capital, Maputo. Its colonial architecture has seen grander days, the market stalls sell everything from fish to curios and the sidewalk cafes are a convenient place to watch the world go by. DAYS 4, 5 & 6: PONTA DA BARRA The views en route are striking. Inland lakes glisten on one side of the road and a brilliant blue sea sparkles on the other. For centuries Arab and Persian traders exchanged cloth, salt and beads for slaves, ivory and gold in Inhambane Bay. We continue to Ponta Da Barra, a peninsula of long white beaches. Our camp for three nights is surrounded by coconut palms. The next two days are set aside for enjoying the beach. Relax, tan and swim or enjoy the optional activities of snorkelling, diving or fishing - the choice is yours. The beauty of the location will form a lasting memory. DAY 7: VILANCULOS This is an incredible coast. We carry on to Vilanculos. Shopping in the local markets is an integral part of the tour and here the fish market yields its catch for a superb seafood barbecue. DAYS 8: BAZARUTO ARCHIPELAGO Open your tent, take in the view and walk down to the boat. We sail across to the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago, proclaimed a national park in 1971. The protected reefs support dolphins and marine turtles. There are myriads of tropical fish to discover while snorkelling in the warm crystal clear waters. We camp on the islands for one night, walk deserted beaches and watch the sun slide into the ocean at the end of the day. DAY 9: VILANCULOS Passing fishermen in their small wooden boats, whose fishing methods have remained unchanged for centuries, we sail back to Vilanculos. Our time on the islands will have undoubtedly formed one of the highlights of your time in Mozambique. This is our last night on the coast. DAY 10: CASA MSIKA Relax and watch the changing sceneryduring today’s drive inland towards Zimbabwe. Our destination is Casa Msika on Lake Chicamba where the swimming pool is a welcome sight. DAY 11: CHIMANIMANI After crossing into Zimbabwe, we continue to Chimanimani National Park, an area of remarkable beauty. Enjoy a hike in the mountain scenery where ancient trails of gold traders connect the mountains to the coastal ports. DAY 12: MASVINGO Cross the Birchenough Bridge and continue west to the timeless Great Zimbabwe Ruins. The massive stone constructions, with their strange conical towers, intrigue archaeologists. Zimbabwe, meaning "House of Stone", gives the modern nation its name. Explore the ruins, rich in legends of vanished civilisation. DAY 13: TSHIPISE Heading towards the border, roadside curio stalls offer you a last chance to take a piece Zimbabwean art home with you. Crossing the Limpopo River brings us back into South Africa.
