Otters Inn

Estelle and Pieter are hugely enthusiastic about the charms of the Overberg and love talking about its history, environment and potential. From their house (built in 1926 by the Speaker of the South African parliament) near Hermanus you can visit most of the area's 'jewels' within 30min. You can also join Estelle on a 12km beach hike to walk off the superb breakfast, which always includes a house speciality such as crêpes filled with crayfish.

Those of a less active disposition can, in season, watch whales frolicking right in front of the house. The Spaarwaters can show you a tidal swimmingpool, and there is a fynbos garden too with tiny orchids, a natural playground for local birds. The guest house is arranged around a central hall and an enclosed verandah, and the four wood-floored rooms have shutters, mohair rugs, silk duvets and particularly attractive beds. They are bright and fresh in feel and the Spaarwaters have brought great taste to bear. Two have their own sea-facing sitting rooms and two have bigger bathrooms with bath and showers - you choose. They have a swimmingpool too and many books (on whales) to read beside it. Excellent golf nearby. Closed End of May - mid July.
