There are two lounges, one of them decorated in the traditional Cape Dutch
fashion. It has copies of the transfer deeds signed by Simon Van der Stel
displayed on the wall. The other is situated in the original farm kitchen
with doors leading onto the formal vegetable garden. The patio offers shelter
for guests to relax and perhaps catch up on the reading of a long overdue
novel. The back of Table Mountain provides for a stunning view over the
fairways. The gable of the building is a traditional "convex-concave'
design.
The large dining room table reflects the importance of family mealtimes in
days gone by. This table can be used for private functions seating a maximum
of 22 people.
The well polished original yellowwood floor provides the house with a homely
atmosphere.
Jonker's Huis
The name of the building directly translated from Afrikaans is "young man's
house" - this was the house which the oldest son moved into after his
marriage. Out of his mother's house but still a stone throw away. We have 5
rooms in this house - Two Junior Suites (Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon),
both groundfloor rooms with a back door leading out onto a patio overlooking
the vineyards and the golf course in the distance.
Three luxury Rooms (Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo, Bukettraube), all loft rooms with
skylight windows and spectacular views over False Bay.
Each room is individually decorated and provide every modern convenience.
The central lounge, with fireplace and comfortable furniture, opens onto a
patio. This is an east-facing building and therefor gets the beautiful
morning sun. Quality reading material is available throughout the house.
Challenge your partner to a game of chess and backgammon or your
house-neighbour to a game of bridge.
The Restored Barn
This is the largest house and contains ten bedrooms. Two Junior Suites
(Champagne, Pinotage), both spacious rooms with large bathrooms. The patio's
overlook the mountains and forest, facing west for lovely afternoon sun. Three
ground floor Luxury Rooms (Chenin Blanc, Riesling, Colombard), all with doors
leading onto the patio facing the Steenberg Winery on the hill. Five upstairs
Luxury Rooms (Shiraz, Hermitage, Merlot, Gewürtztraminer, Muscadel), all loft
rooms with the ceilings that follow the natural flow of the Cape Dutch
buildings. Lovely appointed bathrooms with timber floors.
All fabrics used in this house are light and fresh. A central lounge offers
guests to relax and disappear from the normal rush of the day. Reception is
situated in this building.
Each house has a different gable, reflecting different building periods.
Guests staying in a specific house are not bound to only those facilities -
we encourage guests to rome around and experience all that Steenberg has to
offer.
GOLF
The private Steenberg Golf Club is available to hotel guests, members and
their guests only. The golf course has been designed to take full advantage
of natural features and hazards. The design of the central clubhouse is
harmonious with the historic architecture of the estate. The cool, airy rooms
are fronted with green French doors onto a terrace.
The course was designed and built by one of South Africa's leading golf
course architects, Peter Matkovich. The 18 hole championship golf course
meanders leisurely through the Steenberg vineyards, pine forests and gentle
waterways.
The course features four distinct areas: Wetlands, Parklands, The Cape Flats
and Fynbos. With five different tees, the course can be enjoyed by all, from
championship to junior level. Many golfers envy the superb condition of this
soft spike course and it is widely renowned for having the best greens in
Cape Town. There are also a number of practice areas, including a driving
range, chipping area with sand traps and a large putting green.
ACTIVITIES
Steenberg is an ideal starting point for a visit to some of the Cape's other
attractions. The warm waters and white sands beaches of False Bay and the
spectacular views of Chapman's Peak are a few minutes away, a drive to Cape
Point Nature Reserve takes only 45 minutes, the centre of cosmopolitan Cape
Town, South Africa's mother city, is less than half an hour. Day trips and
tours can be arranged at your request. Among others, the following are
available: Cape Peninsula Tour, Country Winelands Tour, Constantia Winelands
Tour, Table Mountain and City Tour, Mountain Bike Tours and ferry trips to
Robben Island.
